Man Forms Unlikely Friendship with Fish in Minnesota Lake
Minnesota Diver Becomes Part of the Fish Family
A Minnesota diver named Rex Colubra has formed an amazing bond with several fish in a local lake. What started as a friendship with one curious fish has now turned into multiple underwater friendships.
Meeting Elvis
Back in 2021, Rex was diving when he noticed one smallmouth bass swimming closer to him than the others. This fish, which Rex later named Elvis, showed an unusual lack of fear around humans.
When Rex returned to the lake weeks later, something remarkable happened. Elvis recognized him and swam right up to greet him. Rex fed the friendly fish some crawfish and taught him a special call - a gulping grunt sound.
Now, whenever Rex makes this special sound, Elvis appears and follows him throughout his dive. So far, the pair have completed 34 dives together.
The School Expands
Elvis isn't the only fish who wants to hang out with Rex anymore. Other fish in the lake have noticed the special bond between Rex and Elvis and started to join in.
Two largemouth bass, which Rex named Lars and Larry, now also respond to his grunt call and tag along during dives.
Fish Family Dynamics
With new fish joining the group, some interesting behaviors have emerged. Elvis sometimes gets jealous when other fish get too close to Rex. He acts as Rex's underwater security guard, warding off fish that come too near.
Rex can tell each fish apart by their unique markings. Elvis is especially easy to identify because he has scars around his mouth from a previous catch-and-release encounter with a fisherman.
Protecting His Friends
To protect Elvis and his other fish friends, Rex keeps the exact location of the lake secret. He doesn't want eager fishermen trying to catch his underwater buddies.
However, Rex does share videos of his special underwater friendships on social media. He plans to return to the lake soon to check on Elvis and the rest of his fish family.
These unusual friendships show that bonds can form between different species in the most unexpected ways - even between a human diver and a school of fish in a Minnesota lake.
