Hardware Shopping Seal Marks the Start of 'Seal Silly Season' in New Zealand
When a Seal Becomes Your First Customer of the Day
Staff at a New Zealand hardware store got quite the surprise when their first customer of the day waddled in on flippers. A seal entered Bunnings Hardware store at 6:30 a.m. on a Monday morning, before employees could even finish their morning coffee.
What is 'Seal Silly Season'?
This unexpected shopper wasn't actually looking to start a home renovation project. The seal was simply taking part in what New Zealanders know as 'Seal Silly Season.' This annual phenomenon happens from June to September when young seal pups begin exploring their surroundings with sometimes too much enthusiasm.
During these months, the curious creatures often venture beyond their usual habitats and end up in some very unusual places.
How to Handle a Seal in Your Hardware Store
The quick-thinking Bunnings staff knew exactly what to do with their flippered browser. They gently contained the seal in the back area of the store using appliance boxes to create a makeshift barrier. Then they called in the experts from the Department of Conservation, who safely transported the wandering marine mammal back to a nearby reserve.
Past Adventures of New Zealand's Exploring Seals
This hardware store visit is just one example of seal adventures during the Silly Season. Past seal explorers have:
- Taken a swim in Hobbiton Lake at the famous Lord of the Rings movie set
- Broken into someone's house for a cozy nap on their couch
- Cruised through a KFC drive-through lane
What to Do If You Spot a Seal Explorer
The Department of Conservation advises people to keep their eyes open for these wandering creatures over the next few months. If you happen to encounter one of these adventurous mammals:
- Keep your distance
- Don't try to help on your own
- Call the Department of Conservation if the seal appears to be in trouble
While it might be tempting to help a seal find hardware supplies or fast food, these wild animals are best left to the professionals when they stray too far from home.
