Lost Cat Travels 900 Miles to Reunite With Family After Vacation Mishap
The Disappearance
A camping trip turned into a nightmare for Benny and Suzanne from Salinas, California when their beloved cat Rainbow disappeared into the wilderness. The couple was enjoying an RV vacation with their two cats last summer when disaster struck at Yellowstone National Park.
Something in the park spooked Rainbow. Despite being on a leash, the frightened feline broke free from his collar and bolted straight into the dense forest.
A Desperate Search
For four long days, Benny and Suzanne searched the park. They combed through the wilderness calling Rainbow's name. A park ranger warned them that Rainbow's chances were poor due to the local wildlife that could harm a house cat.
Still, the couple kept looking until they simply couldn't stay any longer. With heavy hearts, they packed up their RV. As they drove away, they called out Rainbow's name between sobs, hoping for a miracle.
During their sad journey home, Suzanne spotted a double rainbow in the sky. She took it as a sign of hope that their Rainbow might somehow find his way back to them.
The Miracle Call
Two months passed with no word about Rainbow. Then, out of the blue, Suzanne received a phone call that seemed impossible. Rainbow had been found alive in Roseville, California—nearly 900 miles from Yellowstone and only about 200 miles from their home.
The story of Rainbow's rescue began when a woman named Alex arrived at work and heard distressed cat cries. Over several days, she slowly built trust with the skinny stray, offering food and comfort. When she finally managed to get him to a shelter, staff scanned his microchip and made the amazing discovery—this was Rainbow, the cat who had disappeared from Yellowstone months before.
The Reunion
Benny and Suzanne rushed to pick up their lost family member the very next day. When they saw Rainbow, they were shocked. He had lost almost half his body weight during his ordeal. But despite being thin and tired, the tough cat was still fighting.
How did Rainbow travel almost 900 miles? No one knows for sure. The most likely theory is that he somehow hitched a ride with travelers who happened to be heading toward California.
Home Sweet Home
Today, Rainbow has returned to his healthy weight and seems even more affectionate than before his adventure. His humans aren't taking any chances with future escapes, though—they've fitted him with a GPS collar just in case he gets any more big travel ideas.
Rainbow's incredible journey shows the amazing determination of animals to find their way home, even across impossible distances.
