Pilot Adopts Kitten Mid-Flight While Rescuing 50 Hurricane Animals

When Southwest Airlines pilot Matthew Prebish volunteered to fly 147 animals from hurricane-affected shelters to safety, he never expected to fall in love. But one persistent kitten had other plans.

From Rescue Mission to Unexpected Adoption

Southwest Airlines pilot Matthew Prebish always considered himself more of a dog person. That changed during a special rescue flight when a small kitten captured his heart.

A Mission to Help Hurricane Victims

Captain Matt volunteered for an important task. He teamed up with Greater Good Charities and Lucky Dog Animal Rescue to help empty animal shelters in areas hit by hurricanes Helene and Milton. The goal was simple but vital - fly existing shelter animals to rescues in other parts of the country. This would create space in the affected shelters for newly displaced pets lost during the hurricanes.

An Unexpected Connection

After landing in Milwaukee, some delays gave Captain Matt time to meet his four-legged passengers. That's when he noticed Avery, a kitten pressed against the side of her crate. She kept meowing at him, almost as if she was trying to get his attention specifically.

When Matt held Avery, something special happened. He instantly felt a connection that he couldn't ignore. Despite having no plans to adopt an animal that day, Matt knew they were a perfect match.

A Quick Family Decision

Captain Matt called his wife to discuss the possibility of bringing Avery home. His wife wasn't surprised at all. In fact, she immediately approved the adoption, saying she had a feeling all along that he might return with a new family member.

Happy Endings All Around

Avery has settled perfectly into her new home with the Prebish family. Her story is just the beginning of many happy endings from this rescue mission. The flight carried 95 cats and 52 dogs in total, all of whom will soon find their forever homes too.

This heartwarming tale shows how rescue missions can lead to unexpected joy - not just for the animals being saved, but for the people helping them as well.
