Georgie the Tortoise's Quest for the Perfect Meal
A New Home for Georgie
Meet Georgie, the 30-year-old tortoise with quite a story! This adventure starts when Savannah adopted Georgie from Arizona's Tortoise Conservation Program. They both share the same age, making them a perfect duo. The program finds homes for tortoises that can't go back into the wild, and adopters like Savannah need to create special habitats.
The Perfect Habitat... Almost
Savannah worked hard to build a great home and burrow for Georgie, including planting all sorts of yummy vegetation she thought Georgie would love. But when Georgie moved in, she wasn't all that interested in her new digs and greenery.
Turns out, Georgie preferred munching on the ordinary weeds growing in the yard, kind of like when a cat prefers the box over the fancy toy inside it!
Team Tortoise Chef
Savannah wanted to make sure Georgie got the best meals, so she started giving her kale and dandelion greens. But then she had an idea—why not ask the neighbors for help? When Savannah reached out to see if she could bring Georgie by to snack on their weeds, her neighbors were all in!
They even turned into 5-star tortoise chefs, gathering delicious tortoise food bundles for Georgie. One neighbor offered prickly pear, which quickly became Georgie's favorite snack. Not only does she love eating it, but she also enjoys a little prickly pear 'lip gloss' for special occasions.
Growing Together
Some experts think Georgie's picky eating might be due to a bad diet earlier in her life. But Savannah is dedicated to finding the right foods and keeping Georgie healthy and happy. She's looking forward to many more years with her shelled friend, as they both grow older together.
