A 57-Year Love Story: How One Family's Tree Became the Rockefeller Christmas Icon
From Front Yard to Rockefeller Center
A special Norway spruce stands tall in Rockefeller Center this Christmas season. But behind this magnificent 74-foot tree lies a fifty-seven-year love story that began in Massachusetts.
Back in 1967, newlyweds Earl and Leslie Albert planted a tiny Norway spruce in the front yard of their Massachusetts home. They had no idea their small sapling would one day become one of the most famous trees in America.
Growing Together Through the Years
Over the decades, the spruce grew alongside the Albert family. It was there when they welcomed their son into the world. The tree stood strong as the family faced both happy times and hard moments. Year after year, it grew taller, becoming a 74-foot reminder of everything the Alberts built together.
A Heartbreaking Loss and Unexpected Timing
In 2020, the Albert family faced deep sadness when Leslie passed away at 78 years old. She had always loved Christmas with all her heart.
Then something remarkable happened just two days after her passing. Eric Pose, Rockefeller Center's head gardener, happened to drive by their house. He noticed their magnificent spruce and felt drawn to it. He knocked on their door that very day.
A New Purpose for a Beloved Tree
Eric came with an incredible offer - he wanted their beautiful spruce to become the 2024 Rockefeller Center Christmas tree. For Earl, this felt like more than just coincidence. It seemed as if Leslie herself had somehow arranged it all, especially given her lifelong love of Christmas.
Earl happily accepted the offer as a special tribute to his late wife. He knew this would have made Leslie so proud.
Bringing Light to Countless Visitors
Now the Albert family tree is lighting up New York City every night. It helps create new holiday memories for thousands of visitors who pass by to admire its beauty.
Earl says that sharing their tree with the world has been one of the greatest honors of his life. He knows Leslie would be absolutely thrilled to see their tree bringing so much joy to others.
A Beautiful New Chapter
The story of this special tree doesn't end when the holiday season is over. After the lights come down, the spruce will be donated to help build a home for another family.
It's a fitting new chapter for a tree that has already witnessed so many chapters in the lives of the Albert family. From a small sapling planted by newlyweds to a symbol of holiday cheer for millions, this tree continues to bring people together in meaningful ways.
