Florida Man's Custom 'Chicken Vacuum' Saves Tiny Chick from Drain
Florida Man Rescues Trapped Chick with Custom Vacuum
A Florida man put his specially designed "chicken vacuum" to use for the first time when he found a baby chick trapped in a drain tunnel. Dylan, who runs the Ybor Misfits Microsanctuary, had kept the device ready for six months waiting for just such an emergency.
Creating the Chick-Saving Device
After seeing Key West Chicken Rescue successfully use a modified Shop Vac to rescue chickens from drains, Dylan reached out to learn how to make his own. His rescue device started as a cordless Shop Vac that he retrofitted with special PVC attachments. The most important part was a filter at the end that stops chicks from getting pulled completely into the vacuum.
The Rescue Mission
When Dylan found the trapped chick, he first tried to lure it out using recorded chicken sounds. When that didn't work, he knew it was time to bring out his literal chick magnet. He rushed home to grab the special vacuum.
About fifteen seconds after using the device, Dylan had a slightly grumpy baby chicken at the end of the tube. The rescue was quick and successful.
Happy Reunion
In a lucky twist, the rescued chick turned out to be related to another baby chicken Dylan had recently saved during a cold snap. The siblings were reunited at the sanctuary, where they'll stay until they find their forever home.
Dylan's chicken sanctuary specializes in rescuing wayward chickens, and his preparation paid off with this successful drain rescue.
