Meet Duck: The Rainbow Bay Surfer Who's Making Waves
The Surfing Duck at Rainbow Bay
There's a special resident at Rainbow Bay in Australia who catches waves every day. His name is Duck, and he's become quite famous for his surfing skills. Duck isn't your average beach-goer - he's actually a duck!
A Family Tradition of Beach Ducks
Duck has been visiting the beach since he was just 7 days old, always accompanied by his owner Kate and her son. Kate's family has deep roots in Rainbow Bay, having moved there back in 1903. Throughout all these years, they've been caretakers of the ocean.
About 40 years ago, a new rule came into effect that banned dogs from the beach. The rule didn't mention anything about ducks, though. This gave Kate's mother an idea - she would get a different type of beach companion. Since that clever decision, the family has always had a beach duck as part of their household.
Meet Duck the 4th
The current surfing sensation is actually Duck the 4th in the family line of beach ducks. He has his own pond and plenty of space at his home, but Duck much prefers the ocean waves.
Kate shares that Duck can tell when it's beach time as soon as she brings out the sunscreen at home. He gets so excited that he runs around in circles by the surfboards in the backyard, clearly showing he's ready to hit the waves.
A Local Celebrity
All the Rainbow Bay locals know Duck and look out for him. They give him space to surf and always keep a watchful eye on him when he's in the water. He's become something of a local treasure that everyone helps protect.
Surf and Santas
In return for all the love he receives, Duck hosts a special annual event called "Surf and Santas" every December. Beach-goers gather with their inflatables to celebrate the holiday season together. It's a fun community tradition that brings people together, and planning for this year's Christmas party is already underway.
Duck even has his own social media account where fans can follow his surfing adventures.
