Orphaned Kangaroo Pippa Takes Her First Hops Outside Her Pouch

Meet Pippa, an orphaned kangaroo who just took her first hops outside her pouch! Rescued before she even had fur, see how dedicated caretakers helped this determined joey reach this major milestone.

Orphaned Kangaroo Pippa Takes Her First Hops Outside Her Pouch

Pippa, the orphaned kangaroo, has left her pouch for the first time ever and has successfully taken her first steps. This marks a major milestone in her development at The Kangaroo Sanctuary.

Pippa's Early Life

Pippa lost her mother at a very young age. When she arrived at the kangaroo sanctuary, she hadn't even begun to grow hair. Her caretakers knew they needed to create a safe environment for her to continue developing.

Kangaroos typically stay in their mothers' pouches for the first six to nine months of their lives. To mimic this natural process, Pippa was given her own makeshift pouch at the sanctuary. She rested in it full time while she continued to grow.

Creating a Natural Environment

The staff at the sanctuary have done everything possible to create the most natural environment for Pippa. They even cover her eyes while feeding her, simulating the darkness she would experience inside her mother's pouch.

Through their careful attention, Pippa has grown stronger and stronger. She's gained weight and shown off her curious personality as time has passed.

A Successful First Hop

Recently, Pippa had her very first opportunity to leave her pouch. This was her chance to practice standing and give hopping a try. Her first trial run was a major success!

Pippa not only managed to take her first hops but also showed her comfort with her new skills by hopping right back into her pouch on her own when it was time to rest again.

The Road Ahead

Pippa's caretakers will continue to build upon her time outside the pouch over the next several months. This gradual approach helps her strengthen her muscles at a natural pace.

Though she'll soon spend more time hopping around with the other rescues, her journey is just beginning. The Kangaroo Sanctuary has an incredible track record of rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing kangaroos back into the wild.

For kangaroos like Pippa who may not be able to return to the wild, the sanctuary provides a safe, permanent home where they can thrive.
