Lost Sheep Living With Kangaroos Gets 28-Pound Haircut After Rescue
The Mysterious Case of a Sheep Among Kangaroos
Sugar the sheep vanished from his Australian farm over five years ago. For a long time, nobody knew what had happened to him. Then something strange happened last year - people began spotting a lone sheep living with a mob of kangaroos at Sugar Reservoir in Australia.
An Unusual Friendship
The sight was both odd and heartwarming. This lost sheep had somehow been accepted into a group of kangaroos, and they seemed to get along just fine. Sugar had found himself a new family in the wild.
But while this unusual friendship was special, it wasn't the best situation for Sugar's health and wellbeing.
Why Wild Living Was Dangerous for Sugar
Sheep aren't meant to live in the wild without human care. One big problem is their wool. Unlike wild animals, domesticated sheep need regular haircuts. Without shearing, their wool keeps growing and growing.
Too much wool makes it hard for sheep to move around. Even worse, they can get too hot, especially during summer months. This puts them at risk of overheating, which can be deadly.
The Rescue Mission
Once Sugar was spotted with his kangaroo friends, rescue efforts began right away. People wanted to bring him to safety and give him the care he needed.
After months of trying, rescuers finally succeeded at the end of last month. Sugar was safely captured and brought in for some much-needed grooming.
A Woolly Transformation
The professional shearing revealed just how much wool Sugar had been carrying around. Rescuers removed a whopping 28 pounds of excess wool from his body!
After his massive haircut, Sugar looked like a completely different animal. Gone was the overgrown coat that had been weighing him down and putting his health at risk.
Sugar's New Home
Currently, Sugar is staying at Forever Friends Animal Rescue. The staff there are keeping a close eye on his health to make sure he's doing well after his wild adventure.
But this isn't his final stop. Once Sugar gets a clean bill of health, he'll be going to live with Georgia Duncan, the person who led the charge to rescue him.
From farm escapee to kangaroo companion to rescued pet, Sugar's journey has been anything but ordinary. Now he's looking forward to a safe, properly-groomed life with someone who cared enough to bring him home.
