The Remarkable Rescue of Oscar: A Tiny Duck's Journey from Trash to Treasure
From Trash to Treasure: Oscar's Extraordinary Beginning
Oscar the duck began her life in an unlikely place - a trash can. But don't feel bad for her. These days, she's living a life of duck luxury.
Oscar came from a clutch of seven eggs, but her egg was noticeably different. At about half the size of a typical call duck egg, she stood out from the start. When her brothers and sisters began to hatch, Oscar stayed put.
A Premature Goodbye
Jason Bennett, who has plenty of experience raising ducks and geese, knew that siblings in a clutch typically hatch within 24 hours of each other. He gave Oscar extra time, but after 60 hours with no action, hope began to fade.
Using a bright light, Jason checked through Oscar's shell for signs of life. Seeing no movement inside the tiny egg, he made the sad but seemingly sensible decision to discard it.
The little egg ended up in the garbage, and Jason went about his day.
The Miracle in the Trash Can
Seven hours later, something amazing happened. As Jason returned home, he heard a tiny cry coming from the trash can. Against all odds, Oscar had hatched!
Despite being smaller and looking a bit different from her siblings, Jason never saw Oscar as the ugly duckling of fairy tales. Instead, he fell in love with her right away.
Living Her Best Duck Life
Since her unlikely rescue, Oscar has become Jason's constant companion. This little duck has quite the life, hanging out on the couch to watch documentaries, helping with the dishes, going on road trips, and enjoying plenty of outdoor time.
Now one month old, Oscar grows stronger every day. She's full of energy and gets along wonderfully with all of Jason's other ducks.
